End of week 3!

Wheee~! Three weeks into the semester and we’re still trying to get organised in the SC. Even though there was supposed to be a proper handover, and a manual of procedures for us to refer to, we only had very brief meetings with each respective previous Councillor, so everything we’re doing, we’re learning on the spot and relying on a couple of current Councillors who had been part of the 2011 SC. Haha.

The thing about the procedures and manuals though, the previous President had made it sound like his team had been making a breakthrough, thinking up the idea. And his team were supposed to create these manuals for us to refer to, manuals which we can add on to and pass on for future elected members. BUT, 2011 didn’t leave us any manuals, and instead, we find useful manuals (and reports) from 2009 and 2010, when the 2011 Pres had given us the impression the previous Councils before him were utterly disorganised! So the guy, who’d managed to impress everyone with his “big” ideas, in truth, never really managed to do much. *roll eyes* In truth, I wasn’t all too impressed with the previous Pres, and from what we’ve seen so far that was left behind by his council, I’m kinda thinking my first instincts were right. But damn, even if he’s just full of big ideas and no action, he’s managed to carry himself so damn well, he’s scored a pretty decent job, probably just based on how great he makes himself seem. -_- This is truly a skill I need to learn. *sigh*

More SC stuff that you might not be interested in, but I found strange. First of all, I can’t believe that other than miscellaneous stationery, the previous council had to get someone to buy A4 paper whenever they needed it, instead of utilising the same vendors who deliver the paper to campus. O_o All I had to do was call the ICT department and get in touch with the person ordering the paper to get the vendor’s contacts, and this Wednesday, the vendor is going to deliver six boxes of paper. Awesome. *roll eyes*

No one had wanted to take charge of stationery, and since I needed stuff, I had gone shopping for that, and now the secretaries reluctantly admit the job should be theirs. Initially, A was like, didn’t you volunteer to do all stationery buying? I was like, no, I didn’t. I did it cos I needed to get stuff and no one wanted to do it. Even the paper thing: people were saying, oh, I’ll ask the previous guy where he got his paper from, etc. Even when I suggested they just call ICT and ask where they order their paper, no one wanted to do anything. So when I was calling ICT to ask who was in charge of the campus’ paper supply, I think a few people thought it was strange. A was like we shouldn’t bother other people with our problems. What they don’t realise is that you _have_ to ask around in order to find out and get what you want, which in this case was just who was the supplier of paper. Whatever you’re going to do out there in the real world, if you don’t ask when you don’t know (especially if it’s something so minor), you’re just standing around doing _nothing_, and wasting time trying to think of solutions when someone else might already have it.

It’s these days that I realise that I’d really learned a lot when I was working; from how to deal with people, to picking up a lot of experiences by just listening and observing how other people work. It has all really helped me quite a bit: knowing what to expect, and what to question; learning to recognise when people might just be braggarts, and who the real workers might be; the habit of picking up the phone without hesitation to call around and ask for help, or asking questions about certain things when they don’t make sense, and even how to talk to upper management on pretty equal footing (I always thank CTB for being such a small bank that we’re pretty much “family” rather than superior and junior). Personally, it’s been a big advantage to me, that I came in with so much experience, though my being pretty even-headed helped as well. Though at times, I do feel so old when I hear something totally naive. XD
